Hurricane Isaias brought a period of wind and heavy-rain concern to west-central Georgia. In its October 10 local statement, the National Weather Service in Peachtree City placed the post-tropical system about 90 miles west-southwest of Columbus and said wind and rainfall impacts were unfolding across North and Central Georgia. That regional report does not tell you whether an individual home was damaged, but it is a good reason to check your property safely.
Start with a ground-level roof check
Do not walk on a roof after a storm. From the ground, look for missing or lifted shingles, roofing material in the yard, bent metal at roof edges, damaged flashing, or a branch resting on the roof. A leak may not be visible from outside, so check ceilings and upper walls for new stains, bubbling paint, or damp spots.
Keep away from downed power lines, unstable trees, and loose debris. If you see a branch or other object on the roof, do not try to remove it yourself. A qualified roofer can assess the area and recommend a safe next step.
Check gutters and downspouts from a safe place
Look for sections that are sagging, pulling away from the fascia, visibly bent, or separated at a joint. Check whether downspouts are still connected and whether water is draining away from the home. If you notice overflow during rain, a blockage or a damaged connection may be part of the problem. Do not climb a ladder in wet or windy conditions to inspect or clear it.
Storm debris can collect in gutters, but not every overflow is caused by leaves. A loose section, crushed downspout, or drainage layout problem may need a closer inspection. Avoid using a pressure washer or climbing onto a roof to clear debris; either can create a safety hazard or cause additional damage.
Document what you see
Take photos from the ground, note when you first saw a leak or other change, and keep records of any temporary protection or professional inspection. If you plan to contact your insurer, review your policy and follow the insurer's claim instructions. A contractor can document visible roofing conditions, but coverage decisions are made by your insurance company under your policy.
When to request an inspection
Schedule a professional inspection if you see missing shingles, new interior water marks, a gutter pulling loose, or a downspout that no longer drains. Even when damage is not obvious from the ground, a qualified roofer can help determine whether closer inspection is warranted.
